<image:caption>Story & Photos by Shahein Fitzpatrick A trio of local women who are making waves in the farming sector have shared how their successful partnership came about, the challenges they face and the importance of local entrepreneurship. Roberta Williams, 72, is proud to be the oldest of the business team, which also includes Carolyn McCoy, 60, and Kathleen Forde.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Women prove age is no barrier to launching innovate farming enterprise - “We are a part of Seasonz; that is the name of our business. Roberta and I are agriculturists by training, Carolyn is a banker by training, we are all now into agriculture,” Forde told Observer. She said the farming venture the ladies launched earlier this year in Freemans Village uses the soil-less practice of hydroponics.</image:title>

<image:title>Writings - Women prove age is no barrier to launching innovate farming enterprise - “There are different types of hydroponics; ours is the nutrient film technique. It basically has the nutrients in the water which pass over the roots and provide the nutrients for the plants,” Forde explained.</image:title>

<image:title>Writings - Women prove age is no barrier to launching innovate farming enterprise - “We have three different types of lettuce thus far – romaine, green leaf and red leaf. We anticipate that we will go into other leafy products in the future such as kale, arugula, and other sorts of shallow-rooted, greeny leaf products. “The beauty about the hydroponics system is that it recycles the water, and we are helping the environment in terms of conserving water,” Forde said.</image:title>

<image:title>Writings - Women prove age is no barrier to launching innovate farming enterprise - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Williams said hydroponics is less physically gruelling than traditional farming. “In terms of dealing with our age, it is much easier on us rather than having to farm in the ground,” she said. She continued that she had been looking for a way to bring in an income when she retired two years ago. The idea came about during discussions with Forde. “The Gard Centre, where I used to work, was actually doing some training and that gave us a great idea of the possibility of us going into this area,” Williams said.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Women prove age is no barrier to launching innovate farming enterprise - McCoy said she had retired from Antigua Commercial Bank in November after 35 years. “The timing was right and it provided an opportunity to do something different, something new, something out of doors. “I like the outdoors. Whereas at the bank I was more often inside or with air conditioning, this project suited me,” she explained.</image:title>

<image:caption>McCoy added, “It is important that we hone our skills as local people and produce and try to get our people to buy and support what is ours. This helps citizenship, it helps who we are as a nation, it helps us to produce our own, eat our own, like our own, appreciate our own.” Williams said the Covid-19 pandemic had increased the need for the country to be more self-sufficient and “serious” about local business. “Having our own local businesses, supplying food, clothing, whatever else it is, is extremely important,” she said. “We need to support our local craftsmen, our local businessmen and women, whatever is local. Good stuff can come out of Antigua if we put our minds to it,” Forde said. “We can do so much if we don’t see the other persons as our competitor, but as building critical mass within our country.” Williams agreed, saying, working together and pooling resources is key. Forde added, “We are happy with what we are doing, that we are able to contribute, we are happy to be producing and not just simply consuming.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“As women, even though we share the same issues, you might be surprised at how secretive we still are; certain things are very much still taboo,” she explained. “Many women would come into my store with their families and friends and wait until they reach home to reach out to me, to talk about the issues they face.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Naturalist aims to encourage Caribbean women to be their ‘authentic selves’</image:title>
<image:caption>She said many of the solutions to the health issues afflicting women are simpler than they think; it could be as simple as a lack of sunlight or the need to change one’s diet. On Sunday, Davis filmed a commercial at Cedar Valley Golf Course with clients, family and friends to promote her ‘My Herbox’ line of products which includes feminine hygiene items. “Sunday was a celebration of being natural, being our authentic self, being comfortable in our own skins,” she continued.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Everybody was adorned differently, everybody just shined in their own way. That’s the beauty about it too. When you bring women together, people tend to think that it’s always competitive, but my experience has always been very different and I don’t know if it’s a testament to who I am. “When I interact with women, especially doing business and things of that nature, I find it to be a fellowship and camaraderie as opposed to having to outdo each other.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Naturalist aims to encourage Caribbean women to be their ‘authentic selves’</image:title>
<image:caption>Davis said Caribbean women are often influenced by other cultures, which sees them stray from the region’s natural roots. “Part of it is being fed by other people’s culture and trying to embrace it and to fit into that, such as their beauty standards. “Going natural has always been the way for us; that’s who we are, we are natural people.” She explained that she has a law degree which is the path she was previously on but realised she would only be doing it for financial gain.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I started trying to decipher what it is that is for me; I was trying to find purpose and calling and things of that nature. “The next year, I lost my aunt to cancer and at the time I had gone to visit her trying to figure out what school to attend and what I was going to do and things like that. “Seeing a functioning woman decline to a shell and come back to Antigua and die was very pivotal for me. “It definitely opened my eyes and … I started questioning things.”</image:caption>

Samuels told Observer that he moved to America when he was 13 years old with his mom and lived in the Bronx, including other parts of that country.</image:caption>

As a result of over staying in that country, he was deported to Antigua in 2009. The 43-year-old shared that as a child he wasn’t aware or had any knowledge that a person can overstay their visit in a country that requires a visa.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Defence Force has gone beyond its duty to protect and to serve through a farming initiative aimed at increasing food security. As a part of their 39th anniversary and overall vision, the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force welcomed Prime Minister Gaston Browne who visited the Crabbs training facility yesterday to see firsthand the project’s progress.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Defence Force working to boost food security</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Telbert Benjamin, four of the force’s 120 acres of land are currently being farmed, and they have an additional five acres which they are hoping to use to expand their production. Benjamin said that Prime Minister Browne had indicated that the force would receive support to construct a dam within an earmarked five-acre site. Benjamin stated, “The idea behind this is to support the overall food security process, inclusive of what we need as a Defence Force and what other entities within Antigua and Barbuda need.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“We are looking primarily at being able to support, in the not too distant future, the Fiennes Institute as well as one of the [psychiatric] hospitals, with the produce that we get from here. “The food that has been prepared up here over the past months have gone exclusively to the kitchens of the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force. “During the month of April, we were able to produce somewhere in the region of about 2,000 pounds of butternut squash, pumpkins and I think over 15,000 pounds of watermelons, and all of those went into our resources,” he explained.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writings - Defence Force working to boost food security</image:title>
<image:caption>“Plus, we have been able to make some small donations to the soup kitchen in St John’s and a few other charitable organisations. “That has been a part of our testing phase, we tested it and we have proven that we can actually produce.” Benjamin added, “One of the things we as a defence force do is make sure we build capacity among our individuals, among our soldiers here. “My expectations as CDS is that no one comes in here and leaves empty handed; you must leave with some form of skill.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“What we are aiming to do is ensure that our soldiers and sailors have something that they can take away from here, and not only take away for their own need, but take away for the national need as well.” PM Browne said he was “very pleased” with the farm’s progress. “About two years ago we held discussions with the then commander and the leadership of the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force to broaden the contribution of the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force to include a contribution to food security,” he said.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Our country’s economy would have been desolated by Covid, in fact Covid in essence would have exposed the food insecurity of our country and we would have seen an increase in the production in the last several months as the commander indicated.” Browne added, “They’re not only producing food for themselves but they’re also supplying for various institutions. “The plan now is to expand the facilities here, to expand the farm and also to broaden the extent of the animal husbandry to include the production of eggs and to have broilers as well.”</image:caption>
